Sun, heat and light, window by window — written for the two kinds of house that actually stand on this hilltop, not for a catalogue. Real sun angles, real Highveld climate numbers, and what we would specify on each elevation, with the honest trade-offs both ways.

Most shading advice is written for nowhere in particular. This is written for a suburb at 25.7° South, roughly 1,300m up, where the December noon sun sits almost directly overhead and the June noon sun drops to 40° and slides in under the same eave that shaded it in summer. Waterkloof adds two problems of its own: hilltop stands built for an uninterrupted view of the city bowl, and a run of original 1903-era homesteads sitting a few doors from their own rebuilt neighbours. One
Why Waterkloof is its own problem
Waterkloof was laid out in 1903, roughly ten kilometres south-east of the Pretoria CBD, with large erven and Victorian street names — Edward Street, Victoria Street, Crown Avenue — that still carry the hilltop homesteads today.2 It is widely described as South Africa's leading ambassadorial suburb, and a genuine share of its grand houses are embassies or diplomatic residences.3 That matters for a blind specification in a way most suburbs never have to consider: a long run of formal reception windows that has to read as one consistent scheme from the street, not a house of mismatched fixes.
The second complication is that two very different kinds of house sit within a few streets of each other. The original homestead has tall sash and casement windows, a deep plastered reveal, and mouldings that were argued over once and should not be argued with again. Its immediate neighbour may be a full rebuild with a wide glass wall built purely to hold the view. Add roughly 65,000 jacaranda trees across the city, most spectacular in the last two weeks of October,11 and you get heavy street-level shade doing real work at ground floor and nothing at all for an upstairs bedroom or a double-volume glass wall built above the canopy line. One suburb, at least three specifications.

The light here, by season
Pretoria sits at 25°44′ South, about 1,300m above sea level.1 Four numbers do most of the explaining:
Midsummer noon: the sun stands at 87° — three degrees off directly overhead.1
Midsummer the sun sets at 243° — south of west, not due west.1
Midwinter it rises at 69° and sets at 295°, both north of the east-west line.1

Read practically: the summer sun is the easy one and the winter sun is the sneaky one. At 87° a modest veranda shades a north window at midday in December almost by itself. At 40° in June the sun comes in under that same eave and reaches metres across the floor.
Two Highveld facts then change the specification. UV rises roughly 10% for every 1,000m of altitude,6 and a 1994–2009 South African Weather Service study put Pretoria among the two highest-radiation cities it measured, in the high-to-extreme band from August through April.7 Annual sunshine runs to roughly 3,200 hours, with May to August the sunniest months,8 so fabric fading is a year-round problem, not a summer one. And the rain arrives as afternoon Highveld thunderstorms from November to March,9 with hail concentrated on the Highveld and peaking in the December–January afternoon, broadly 13:00 to 17:005 — exactly the hours an awning is most likely to be out.

Take a compass to each room before assuming anything. Four cases, and a fifth for what is above the canopy.
North
Sun every day of the year
Waterkloof's hilltop and ridge stands catch strong, largely unobstructed north light across the city bowl toward the Union Buildings2 — generous in winter, punishing at the top of summer. The mistake is over-specifying: heavy blockout throws away free June heat along with the glare. North wants something adjustable through the day, not a permanent switch.
West
The expensive elevation
From early afternoon the sun swings toward that 243° midsummer sunset and keeps dropping.1 No overhang shades it, because the light arrives from underneath. On an unobstructed hilltop stand there is often nothing across the way to block it either — heat, glare and fabric fading land here together.
East
Glare, not heat
The mirror image of west, but against cool overnight air and cool masonry, so it rarely becomes a heat problem. It becomes a glare problem instead — breakfast rooms and east bedrooms taking direct sun before anyone is ready for it. Light control solves it, far more cheaply than a west elevation ever does.
South
Calm, with a summer caveat
Even, indirect light — the right room for a desk. One caveat: December's sunrise at 116° and sunset at 243° are both south of the east-west line,1 so a south room catches a raking hour of low sun at each end of a December day. In June, none at all.
And then: above the canopy
The jacaranda cover that shades an original homestead's ground floor at street level does nothing for its own first-floor bedrooms, and nothing at all for a rebuilt double-volume glass wall built above the tree line to hold the view.11 Hence the common complaint: a comfortable ground floor, and an upstairs room or a new glass wall taking the raw version of everything in section two.

What we would specify, and why
Seven answers, each with its reasoning and its honest trade-off. Mark the ones that sound like your house — they carry through to the window schedule below.
For hard north or west glass on the ridge and hilltop stands
External venetians, ahead of an interior blockout roller
The physics is the argument. Louvres outside the glass stop the sun before it reaches the pane; an interior blockout absorbs that energy once it is already through, so the fabric and the pane warm and radiate straight back into the room. The tilt also keeps the city-bowl view that a rolled-down blind takes away entirely.
The trade-off, honestly: the most expensive route here, a permanent fixing to the outside of the facade — which on an original homestead can mean a heritage step, covered in section five — and it needs a wind strategy on an exposed hilltop stand. Where external is not possible, sunscreen mesh plus a blockout on a double bracket is the honest second best: less cost, meaningfully less heat control.
Where a venetian will not suit, or a room wants full blockout
Roller shutters — the other way to stop it outside
Aluminium slats rolling down from a headbox outside the glass. Closed, the slat curtain and the trapped air behind it insulate as well as they shade; half-lowered, it takes the top of a tall window and leaves the bottom clear. Better than louvres on a very large or high opening, or a room that would rather be dark and cool than keep a view.
The trade-off, honestly: position, not tilt. And to be plain: these are shading shutters, for sun, heat and glare — not security-rated shutters, which are a different product, quotable on request.
For formal, north-facing reception rooms
Sunscreen mesh, not blockout — and matched across the elevation
North light is the good light; you want the sting taken out, not the room switched off. An open-weave mesh around 5% openness cuts glare and much of the UV while the garden, or the city bowl, stays legible. On a formal residence with a run of matching reception windows — not uncommon on this street — specifying the one fabric and colour across the whole elevation is what makes it read as a scheme rather than a row of individual fixes.
The trade-off, honestly: mesh gives daytime privacy only; after dark, with the lamps on, it reverses and you become the lit side. Where a room genuinely needs both, a double roller answers it — mesh in front, blockout behind.
For bedrooms
Blockout rollers — the reveal matters more than the fabric
Every blockout fabric is opaque, and almost no bedroom complaint is really about the fabric. It is light leaking round the edges, and a deep early-1900s reveal has a lot of edge for that to happen along. Fitted inside the reveal the blind sits properly in the joinery and you accept a hairline each side; face-fixed over the opening it is far darker, at the cost of covering the reveal and the timber.
The trade-off, honestly: no free option here — inside-fit for looks, face-fit for darkness, or inside-fit with side channels for both at the cost of one more component.

For the original joinery, and for rooms that are hard to heat
Timber venetians for the sash windows; cellular where the cold is the problem
Fifty-millimetre basswood slats read at roughly the rhythm of a multi-pane sash's glazing bars, so the window still looks like the one the house was built with — and tilting them upward bounces light off the ceiling, lighting a desk without glare on it. Where the complaint is cold rather than glare — a tall corniced room under Pretoria's dry, clear winter nights — a cellular blind is the better answer: the honeycomb traps air, and it is the air that insulates.
The trade-off, honestly: timber slats collect dust and want the occasional wipe, and past about two metres wide we would split the opening or motorise it. Cellular will not take scrubbing, so kitchens, sculleries and bathrooms get aluminium venetians instead — and cellular does not tilt.
For the terrace, under the jacarandas
A folding-arm awning with a wind sensor — or a zip screen where the stand is exposed
Post-free shade that retracts suits this climate exactly: shade in the summer entertaining months, and the low 40° winter sun back on the paving in July.1 Motorising it is the same argument one step on, and a battery tube means nobody chases cable through original plaster. On a more sheltered, hedge-lined stand an awning is the simpler answer; on an exposed hilltop or ridge edge with nothing to break the wind, a zip screen — mesh tensioned inside side channels — copes with gusts an open awning arm cannot.
The trade-off, honestly: awning fabric is a consumable, and battery tubes want charging once or twice a year. With hail peaking in the late afternoon in December and January,5 a wind sensor on an awning is not an upsell — it retracts the fabric when nobody is home to do it. A zip screen fixed in channels has no such exposure, which is the honest reason to choose it on the more open stands.
For the modern rebuilds, and for long matching elevations
Concealed blind boxes, and a motorised curtain track on top of the blind
A concealed blind box drops the fabric from a slim slot in the ceiling with every bracket hidden — the detail architects specify on the rebuilds standing behind the older street facades here. Where a formal room wants the layered, quiet-luxury upgrade, a motorised curtain track glides heavy lined curtains open on a timer or a button, over the top of the blind doing the actual shading work; on a long run of matching windows, one motor system opens the whole elevation together rather than window by window.
The trade-off, honestly: a concealed box is a build or renovation-stage decision — hard to retrofit into a finished ceiling without opening it. A curtain track is a genuine upgrade, not a replacement for the blind; we specify the blind for the sun problem first and the track as the layer on top.

Five
Heritage & the embassy belt, plainly
Section 34 of the National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999 provides that no person may alter or demolish any structure — or part of a structure — older than 60 years without a permit from the relevant provincial heritage resources authority. In Gauteng, which includes the City of Tshwane, that authority is PHRA-G, and "alter" is defined broadly: any action affecting the structure, appearance or physical properties of a place, including painting or plastering.12 Given Waterkloof's 1903 establishment and its mix of original and rebuilt homes,2 a meaningful share of the original hilltop homesteads could well be old enough to fall under section 34; a modern rebuild on the same stand generally is not.
Inside the reveal is a furnishing decision. Outside the glass is a building decision.
A blind fitted inside the reveal does not alter the structure. Anything fixed to the outside of the facade — external venetian guide rails, an awning cassette, a roller shutter headbox, zip-screen channels — is a change to part of a structure, and on an older homestead may need that PHRA-G permit. Worth adding, honestly rather than as a sourced fact: some embassy and diplomatic residences run their own approval process for anything fixed to the exterior of the building, separate from the municipal heritage process, so it is worth asking before ordering anything external.
What we can do: specify slim profiles and quiet colours, and supply the drawings and product data an application needs. What we will not do is call an approval a formality, or submit it on your behalf.

What only a site visit answers
Everything above follows from a plan and a compass. These five do not, and any one of them can change the recommendation:
Reveal depth, at several points. Openings from the 1903–1930s build-out are rarely square, and the gap between a shallow and a deep reveal decides whether a headbox sits inside the joinery or proud of it.
What is behind the plaster. Solid masonry, later brick-and-cavity, or a rebuilt stud wall — the substrate decides the bracket, and whether an external system is viable on that wall at all.
True orientation, room by room. Hilltop houses are often turned to the view rather than to the street, so orientation cannot be read off the road — and everything in sections two and three depends on it.
Wind exposure at your specific stand. An exposed ridge-edge terrace and a hedge-sheltered embassy garden a few doors apart behave completely differently, which decides an awning versus a zip screen.
Where the power goes, and any sign-off the property needs. Whether a plug is within reach, whether a battery tube recharges without a ladder, and whether the residence has its own approval step for anything visible from outside.
That is the honest reason the measure exists, and why it is free: better to find these out before quoting than after fitting.
